Yesterday marked one week that we have been here.  The first week has been filled with learning Spanish and shopping for food and household items.  I guess these are normal things that come with moving to a new place and starting a new job.  I was excited yesterday, though, to get the first taste of what ministry might be like in the DR.  Miguel and I met with our new landlord (we are moving into a house next week) and a lawyer to talk about the lease.  After we had talked business for about an hour the landlord asked if we worked for a church.  What ensued was an hour conversation about life and faith.  I sat there as Miguel had a conversation with these two middle-aged men.  Here were two professionals on a busy Wednesday afternoon listening intently as Miguel shared.  They were not in a hurry to get to their next appointment.  It was more important to them to sit back and talk about life with us.  Their appointments could wait.  That is one thing I love about this country and their culture.  Time does not control people.  People control their own time.  Relationships are very important in this culture.  Community is present here.  Because of this fact there is great opportunity for ministry.  People’s doors are always open.  And where their is openness there is an opportunity for God to change lives.  Pray that we would foster and build relationships in this community.

  1. Sounds like we could learn a tremendous lesson in what is really important is from the people of DR. Christ was all about people. We are all about keeping schedules. Lose your watches and go with the flow- novel idea huh!

  3. You rascals – here I am still praying, crying, and begging God to send you an answer about missions, and you’ve already gotten the green light and left the country. Couldn’t I have at least gotten an email update a couple of weeks ago?
See if I ever pray for you two again!

  6. Jonathan and Carrie, just wanted to let you two know that we are constantly praying for ya’ll, that the Lord will bless you both and your time in the DR. We miss ya’ll, but we know that the Lord is going to use you in a very special way. We both feel blessed and uplifted when reading your posts. Let us know if we can do anything for you back here. We can’t wait to see you both when you get back. Jonathan, the Dawgs are doing well so far just in case you were wondering.

    We love ya’ll,

    Matt and Megan

  7. Jonathon, your mom gave me the email address and were so excited that we get to check up on the two of you down there. The ministry opportunity sounds and looks fantastic. We are and will continue to pray for you both. May Gods hands protect and guide you as you share Gods living word with those around you. Carrie, keep taking those awesome pictures. It speaks volumes. We love you both dearly!
